According to the shopping street’s history, when the castle town was built, the residence of Horio Yoshiharu, a military commander who served Hideyoshi, stood here, and the name derives from his official title, tatewaki. When Fushimi City was established, the official town name was changed to Nayamachi, but the common name Nayamachi had already been in use before then. The name of today’s shopping street reflects a history in which a name associated with the samurai residences of the castle town was replaced by the name the area later went by as a merchant town. The town’s later growth can be compared with the following 1912 map, which also shows railways and military land. You can buy the sake you tried, and the shop also ships within Japan. You can narrow down your choices according to your purpose, such as finding sake to pair with a meal, trying a sparkling sake, or matching the tastes of the person you are giving it to. [21]

Please check the tasting serving sizes and prices on the menu at the time of your visit. If you want to carry less while walking, you can also check whether a product requires refrigeration and which delivery methods are available in Aburacho’s information or at the shop.

Kyogokuya on Otesuji sells sake, mainly Fushimi seishu, as well as its own house-made Kyoto pickles. Seasonal senmaizuke and “koboreume,” the pressed lees left over from making mirin, are also introduced. The shopping street’s official guide introduces Funashin Sano Shoten as a shop selling live river fish and its own processed river fish products, and Sasaki Pan Honten as a shop selling anpan and jam buns. If you plan to buy fresh food or prepared dishes and then continue walking, checking in advance how long you will be carrying them and how to store them also makes it easier to decide the order in which to visit the shops. The official store list lists the shops on the east and west sides of the street, each from north to south.

On Ryoma-dori, stop by places for meals, Western-style pastries, and coffee

Head south from Aburakake-dori and you reach Ryoma-dori. Along this street, laid out with machiya-style buildings, gas-lamp-style streetlights, and stone paving, are shops selling fruit, vegetables, and pickles, as well as an Italian restaurant, a patisserie, a coffee stand, and more. Besides buying food, you can also stop in to eat or have tea or coffee inside. If you plan to head east from here to the sake brewery district, you can choose either to take a break on Ryoma-dori or to walk as far as Fushimi Yumehyakushu before resting.

On Aburakake-dori and in the sake brewery district, you can buy yokan and sake lees sweets

In Shimo-Aburakake-cho on Aburakake-dori is Fushimi Surugaya Honten, whose signature product is neri-yokan. Kyoto City’s company profile states that it was founded in Tenmei 1 (1781). The history of agar (kanten) production in Fushimi and how neri-yokan made with kanten became a local specialty are explained in our article on kanten. It occupies Gekkeikan’s former head office, completed in 1919, and its café serves cold-brew coffee made with the brewing water, as well as Japanese-style sweets. It is a shop where you can take a break and buy souvenirs in one stop while in the sake brewery district. [7]

If you are giving sweets as a gift, you can check each product for whether it contains alcohol, its shelf life, and its storage method. The shop opened as a branch of the family business, serving as a waiting place for feudal lords boarding boats at Fushimi Port. In addition to yokan and sake manju, it makes monaka modeled on the Kyoto City streetcar that once ran in front of the shop. Knowing the difference between the two—a shop that welcomed waterway travelers, and the streetcars that later ran through the town, now made into the shape of sweets—shows the connection between souvenirs and transportation history. Its official business information introduces the manufacture and sale of Hyakunin Isshu, Korin karuta, and iroha karuta, as well as the sale of go boards, go stones, shogi boards, and shogi pieces. [50]

Korin karuta is a reproduction of the Hyakunin Isshu by Ogata Korin, a painter of the Edo period. The reading cards bear a picture of the poet and the first half of the poem, while the grabbing cards bear the second half of the poem and pictures of flowers, plants, and the like; with 100 cards of each, they form one set. According to the official product description, silkscreen-printed paper is laminated and cut, and the backing paper is applied by hand to each card one at a time to finish it. There are gold leaf paper and washi paper finishes, so even within the same Hyakunin Isshu you can see differences in card designs and finishes. At roof tile works, tile-making techniques and kilns were also used to make clay kotatsu and anka (foot warmers), which were heated by placing charcoal embers and the like inside, and these supported home heating before electric appliances became widespread. Roof tiles and household items are products that could arise from the same local clay and firing techniques.
